Regional Anesthesia

  • Spinal (intrathecal): single-shot; fast onset; used for lower abdominal/limb surgery
  • Epidural: catheter-based; titratable; used in labor, thoracic surgery, postop analgesia
  • Peripheral nerve blocks: brachial plexus, femoral, sciatic, TAP block, etc.
  • Local anesthetic pharmacology: lidocaine, bupivacaine, ropivacaine
  • Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) — a life-threatening emergency; treatment is 20% lipid emulsion
